Two significant hindrance that majority of students face :
#1 Hesitation (“the act of pausing before doing something, especially because you are nervous or not certain”, Cambridge dictionary)
#2 Procrastination (“the act of delaying something that must be done, often because it is unpleasant or boring”, Cambridge dictionary)
Here are 5 complications due to hesitation and procrastination and tips to overcome them.
Complication no #1
Fear of speaking: Hesitation can stem from the fear of speaking incorrectly or being judged by others. This fear can be a significant barrier to language learning.
Tip: Try only to practice speaking in a safe and supportive environment. Start with language self-talk where you can gradually build your confidence without the fear of judgment. Find a study buddy who shares your language learning goals.
Complication no #2
Inconsistent learning: Skipping days or weeks between study sessions can cause you to forget what you've learned, making it harder to build on your knowledge.
Tip: Create a study routine that fits into your daily life and stick to it. Even dedicating a few minutes each day can have a significant impact over time.
Complication No #3
Slow progress: Hesitation and procrastination can lead to slow progress in learning a new language. Avoiding practicing or engaging with the language consistently can result in forgotten vocabulary and grammar, making it harder to advance.
Tip: Set small, achievable goals and create a consistent study schedule. Break down your language learning into daily or weekly tasks, making it easier to manage and track your progress.
Complication No #4
Overcoming Perfectionism: Striving for perfectionism can contribute to hesitation and procrastination in language learning. When you strive for perfection, you may be reluctant to speak or write until you feel your skills are flawless. This can hinder progress and limit your opportunities for practice.
Tip: Embrace the concept of "progress over perfection." Remember that language learning is a journey, and every step forward counts.
Complication No #5
Lack of accountability: Without accountability, it's easy to put off language learning and prioritize other tasks.
Tip: Connect with someone who is also learning the language or has similar goals. Share progress, practice together, and hold each other accountable. Keep a record of your language learning journey.
Note down milestones, achievements and areas for improvement, and establish a reward system for reaching language learning milestones. Seeing your progress can inspire you to stay accountable.
Embrace the challenges, keep a positive mindset, and consistently practice to overcome these obstacles and succeed in your language learning goals.
