Speed reading, also known as Expeditious reading, is a technique that helps people read and comprehend text at a faster pace than usual.
If you've ever wondered how some people seem to breeze through books and articles effortlessly, then this is the secret they're harnessing.
The goal of expeditious reading is to read more quickly without sacrificing understanding. The following tips can help you achieve better speed:
Tip 1: Embrace the Right Approach.
The foundation of successful speed reading lies in your attitude towards the task. Believe in yourself and banish any self-doubt that may creep in. Fuel your motivation and remind yourself that you can conquer speed reading.
Tip 2. Use a pointer.
While reading use the pencil as a pointer from left to right in a continuous motion. Try to keep your eye position, above the tip of your pencil. This would help you to guide your eyes along with the line you read as eyes are naturally attracted to motion. You can increase the pace of your reading gradually. This technique is backed by experts in fast reading.
Additionally, try covering subsequent lines as you read with the pointer; this tactic sharpens your concentration and keeps distractions at bay.
Imagine reading at an impressive speed of 350-400 words per minute while still comprehending the material. With such prowess, you'll breeze through any reading task.
Tip 3: Silence the Little Voices.
To further enhance your reading speed, you must address the issue of subvocalization. Subvocalization is the habit of silently pronouncing each word in your head or hearing those little voices as you read. Some even unconsciously move their lips and throat muscles while reading, taxing their brain unnecessarily. This leads to loss of concentration and forces you to reread passages.
While challenging to overcome, you can minimize subvocalization through consistent practice.
As you do so, you'll notice your reading speed gradually increasing, liberating your mind to absorb information without getting bogged down by unnecessary mental chatter.
Tip 4: Read in Chunks.
Instead of fixating on individual words, try reading in groups of 3 to 5 words at a time. This technique, combined with marking keywords and phrases, enhances your reading speed and comprehension.
To sum it up, the key to mastering speed reading lies in:
- Right attitude.
- Employing a pointer.
- Minimizing subvocalization.
- Reading in Chunks.
Remember, this skill won't be honed overnight, but with patience and persistence, you'll witness substantial progress over time.
